FORUM THEATRE - Action for positive social change

Session 7 - Ready for creative action

You have an interesting challenge in this session: You have to keep the participants' interest in the plays they created in the last sessions, and allow them to keep refining and rehearsing for part of the day.

But you have another, more important, task today - to find those in the group who would be good MCs and to explore the character of the MC who will be the one who makes the Forum Theatre play into an interactive event.

Some will want to try, some will be recommended by others. And as they try out they will need an audience to speak to.

When you have found the three or four who will be good MCs, they can work alone on the points they have to make to the audience, while the others rehearse the plays. You may need to slightly re-cast the plays if some characters are now working as MCs.

Let’s start the day getting ourselves ready for creative action:

  1. Samurai
  • All players stand in a circle.
  • One player (A) starts by lifting her Katana (sword), makes eye contact with an other one (B) in the circle and “cut” him/her with the “sword” while shouting “Ha!”, the receiver (B) lift his/her “sword” to get the cut while shouting “Ha!”.
  • While he/she keeps her sword up in the air, and her 2 neighbors "slaughter" her, by swinging their swords into his/her sides while shouting “Ha!” at the same time.
  • When the neighbours retract their swords, 2 makes eye contact with an other one (C) in the circle and “cut” him/her with the “sword” while shouting “Ha!”, and everything starts all over again, so on.

Please note: Start slowly, and then increase the tempo.

  1. Act - Stop
  • 2 actors (A & B) starting a simple scene, for example discussing an issue.
  • At a moment of the scene (30-45 seconds after the beginning), facilitator say “Stop”, A & B freeze, facilitator them invite another actor (C) come on the stage to replace A or B with the same position and pose.
  • When C is ready in the position, the facilitator says “Act” and C start a brand new scene from his position, trying to use the position that given to start with.
  • And so on.
  1. Sing, Improvise, Illustrate!
  • One group sings a song, another group has to illustrate the song by their improvisational movements
  • Encourage the illustrators to do whatever they think matches the song.

Please note: NB Take a well known song and illustrate it.

Now think about changing the lyrics to speak about your play’s story and practise singing that - with illustrations. This is a gentle introduction to the topic of the dangers of trafficking and what we can do about them. It can be used at the beginning and end of your performance.

  1. Reflection on the previous sessions
  • Take some time to think about the state of the plays you created yesterday.
  • Do you have questions about them?
  • Do you need help?
  • Do you just need more time to practise?
  1. Rehearse your Forum plays
  • Each group has 15 minutes to revisit their play that was created on Day 3 and prepare to present to the other groups.
  • Plays are presented, one by one.
  • After each play, ask the group to reflect on their own: what do they think is OK, what do they think needs to be adjusted or changed, what are the alternatives, etc.
  • Ask other groups to give their feedback or comments to the play that has presented.
  1. Chào mừng và làm chủ không gian
  • All participants start milling about the room.
  • Ask them to greet each other, perhaps just by shaking hands. Players just shake hands, move on, and greet the next player they meet. Then ask the players to greet each other in a more specific way. Possibilities are:
  • greet each other like you greet a long lost friend
  • greet someone you don't really trust
  • greet an ex-lover
  • greet someone you really hate
  • someone you have a secret crush on
  • someone that sold you a crappy used car
  • greet someone like you are a cowboy, a soldier, a nanny, a farmer, etc.

These greetings will prepare you for our work on the MC in the next session. Let’s proceed to look at some necessary skills:

  • How do you walk into a circle and “hold the space”?
  • How do you get attention?
  • How do you make everyone in the room feel that you are their equal, their friend and that you have a great idea for them?
  • One by one walk into the space and try to hold everyone’s attention and greet them with a warm and friendly presence and an easy greeting and tell them you have a great idea for them.
  • Do they trust you?
  • Do they see you as confident but still their equal?
  • Discuss each attempt in the group.

This will take some time but it is worth spending that time.
